What 2016–2021 Civic owners report about the steering

Owners have filed 352 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the steering rack or the power steering on the 2016–2021 Honda Civic, and 1,009 filed under its steering. Those 352, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2016 Civic: 134 complaints
  • 2017 Civic: 68 complaints
  • 2018 Civic: 82 complaints
  • 2019 Civic: 37 complaints
  • 2020 Civic: 8 complaints
  • 2021 Civic: 23 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2016 Civic owner, NHTSA complaint 11754293: "While driving at highway speeds (55–70 mph), the electronic power steering (EPS) physically binds and sticks when held in a straight line. Making minor lane corrections requires a sudden, deliberate application of extra physical force to 'break' the wheel free from the center position."

A 2021 Civic owner, NHTSA complaint 11738707: "Steering rack binds and requires extra effort to return to center. Specifically for me, when proceeding on a long curve that requires me to turn my steering wheel left more than like 40 degrees the steering will "stick" in place and won't automatically return to center when releasing the wheel requiring me manually…"

Recalls that cover the steering rack on the 2016–2021 Civic

  • 18V663000, 2017 and 2018 models: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Honda Civic and CR-V vehicles. The magnet that controls the torque sensor output signal for the electronic power steering system may not be properly secured, allowing the magnet to become dislodged. During a full lock turn, the dislodged magnet may cause steering assist to be applied in the opposite direction. Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gearbox assembly, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Honda dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which steering rack a 2016–2021 Civic takes

Racks differ by steering ratio, by whether the assist motor is on the rack, and on sport trims by the rack itself. The 2016–2021 Honda Civic came with several powertrains, among them 1.5L I4 CVT FWD, 2.0L I4 CVT FWD and 2.0L I4 Manual FWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
