What 2014–2018 Silverado owners report about the steering

Owners have filed 451 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the steering rack or the power steering on the 2014–2018 Chevrolet Silverado, and 817 filed under its steering. Those 451, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2014 Silverado: 233 complaints
  • 2015 Silverado: 113 complaints
  • 2016 Silverado: 47 complaints
  • 2017 Silverado: 34 complaints
  • 2018 Silverado: 24 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2014 Silverado owner, NHTSA complaint 11691030: "The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle drove over a bump in the roadway, the steering wheel became difficult to turn to the left or the right. The contact stated that the messages "Drive with Care" and "Power Steering Fault" were displayed."

A 2015 Silverado owner, NHTSA complaint 11715552: "Vehicle has electrical issues with headlamps flickering and power steering loss (which is electronic) at lower speeds. Power and radio intermittently cut out momentarily and on occasion a "stabilitrac loss" warning flashes."

Which steering rack a 2014–2018 Silverado takes

Racks differ by steering ratio, by whether the assist motor is on the rack, and on sport trims by the rack itself. The 2014–2018 Chevrolet Silverado came with several powertrains, among them 4.3L V6 Automatic RWD, 5.3L V8 Automatic 4WD and 6.2L V8 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
