Bosch GDI High-Pressure Fuel Pump

Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the cylinder at very high pressure, which is why these engines are efficient and also why they carbon up: no fuel washes over the intake valves any more. The high-pressure pump and the injectors work far harder than a port-injection equivalent and wear accordingly.
