What 2019–2025 RAV4 owners report about the collision-avoidance, lane and rear-camera systems

Owners have filed 75 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the radar, a camera, or the emergency braking, adaptive cruise or blind-spot system on the 2019–2025 Toyota RAV4, and 135 filed under its collision-avoidance, lane and rear-camera systems. Those 75, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2019 RAV4: 17 complaints
  • 2020 RAV4: 10 complaints
  • 2021 RAV4: 14 complaints
  • 2022 RAV4: 4 complaints
  • 2023 RAV4: 12 complaints
  • 2024 RAV4: 12 complaints
  • 2025 RAV4: 6 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2023 RAV4 owner, NHTSA complaint 11747538: "The front camera is known to overheat in weather that exceeds 70°F. Which disables the AEB, Cruise Control, Lane Keep, Automatic Headlights, and Automatic Wipers."

A 2024 RAV4 owner, NHTSA complaint 11746514: "The contact owns a 2024 Toyota RAV4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55-60 MPH on a freeway, the blind spot monitoring system intermittently failed to detect vehicles in adjacent lanes. The contact stated that the failure nearly resulted in two crashes. There were no warning lights illuminated."

Recalls that cover the radar sensor or camera on the 2019–2025 RAV4

  • 19V576000, 2019 models: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2019 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles. Due to a damaged electrical connector, the back-up camera may not activate when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply to Federal Motor Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors." Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the back-up camera system and replace the audio display unit, if necessary, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Toyota dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which radar sensor or camera a 2019–2025 RAV4 takes

Radar sensors and cameras differ by driver-assistance package and trim, and blind-spot units by side. Every one has to be calibrated to the car after it is fitted, which is a separate job from the part. The 2019–2025 Toyota RAV4 came with several powertrains, among them 2.5L I4 Automatic AWD and 2.5L I4 CVT AWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
