What 2020–2025 Explorer owners report about the collision-avoidance, lane and rear-camera systems

Owners have filed 201 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the radar, a camera, or the emergency braking, adaptive cruise or blind-spot system on the 2020–2025 Ford Explorer, and 297 filed under its collision-avoidance, lane and rear-camera systems. Those 201, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2020 Explorer: 123 complaints
  • 2021 Explorer: 33 complaints
  • 2022 Explorer: 28 complaints
  • 2023 Explorer: 9 complaints
  • 2024 Explorer: 3 complaints
  • 2025 Explorer: 5 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2020 Explorer owner, NHTSA complaint 11694015: "Put vehicle in reverse camera camera on then went black and the backup lights went out while trying to move resulting in hitting a pole."

A 2025 Explorer owner, NHTSA complaint 11747049: "I took my explorer in on 4-20-2026 for routine maintenance. The ford dealership perform a IPMA update. In the result the update fail and cause front, rear cameras, blind spot, lane assist, front collision, and parking sensors to fail and not work."

Which radar sensor or camera a 2020–2025 Explorer takes

Radar sensors and cameras differ by driver-assistance package and trim, and blind-spot units by side. Every one has to be calibrated to the car after it is fitted, which is a separate job from the part. The 2020–2025 Ford Explorer came with several powertrains, among them 2.3L I4 Automatic 4WD and 3.0L V6 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
