OE
The part in the vehicle manufacturer's box, with the manufacturer's logo and the manufacturer's part number.
Here is what most people do not realise: the carmaker did not make it. Vehicle manufacturers design and assemble vehicles; the alternators, injectors, brake components, water pumps, wiper motors and most of the rest are designed and built by specialist suppliers under contract.
So an OE alternator is a Bosch or a Denso or a Valeo alternator, with the carmaker's number on the box, at the carmaker's price.
OEM
The same part, from the company that actually made it, in that company's own packaging with that company's own part number.
Functionally identical — same factory, same line, same specification. What differs is the box, the number, the distribution channel and, usually, a significant amount of money.
The catch is knowing which supplier made your vehicle's original part. Sometimes the original component is marked with the supplier's own number alongside the carmaker's, which answers it directly. Sometimes a supplier states it in their catalogue. Sometimes it is simply well known within the trade for that model.
Aftermarket
Designed and built independently, to fit the same application.
This tier spans an enormous range and the label tells you nothing on its own. At one end are specialists who genuinely improve on the original — a brake pad compound with less dust, a control arm with a better bush material, a wheel bearing from a bearing manufacturer whose whole business is bearings. At the other end are parts that meet a dimension and nothing else.
What distinguishes the good end:
- A published application table you can check, not just a fitment claim.
- Specifications stated in numbers rather than adjectives.
- A warranty with a stated term and a mechanism to claim on it.
- A brand with a reputation in that specific component, rather than in everything.
Some aftermarket parts genuinely fix an original design's weakness — reinforced control arms and improved-material bushings exist because the originals were the failure point. When an aftermarket manufacturer names the problem their version solves, that is worth reading.
Remanufactured
An original part, taken apart completely, cleaned, inspected against wear limits, rebuilt with new wear components, reassembled and tested to a specification.
This is not a used part and the difference is substantial. A remanufactured alternator has new bearings, new brushes, a new regulator and a tested output. A remanufactured caliper has new seals, a new piston where the old one was pitted, and a pressure test. They carry warranties.
Remanufacturing makes most sense where the expensive part of a component is a casting or a housing that does not wear, and the parts that do wear are replaceable — alternators, starters, calipers, steering racks, turbochargers, and hybrid drive batteries.
For some components it is simply the best available option. A remanufactured turbocharger built by the company that made the original, on the original core, is a better proposition than an unbranded new unit of unknown provenance at a similar price.
The core charge. A refundable deposit that funds the supply of rebuildable units. You get it back when your old part goes back, and the old part has to be complete and rebuildable — a housing that has been cut, drilled or welded is not a core.
How to choose
Safety-critical, and the original design was fine. OEM if you can identify the supplier, OE otherwise. Brakes, steering, airbag components, high-voltage components.
Safety-critical, and the original was a known weak point. A reputable aftermarket specialist who names the improvement.
Expensive assembly where the housing does not wear. Remanufactured, from a remanufacturer that publishes its process.
Wear items with a mature aftermarket. Filters, belts, brake friction, wipers. The aftermarket here is competitive and mostly excellent, and paying for the carmaker's box buys the box.
Electronics and sensors. Be careful. Calibration, protocol and software revision matter, and a dimensionally correct sensor with the wrong response curve produces faults nobody can chase. This is a tier where OE or OEM is often worth the difference.
What the tier label does not tell you
It does not tell you whether the part fits your specific vehicle. That is decided by the application data, the build date and the options fitted — and a top-tier part for the wrong variant is the wrong part.
It also does not tell you what is in the box. A kit and a bare component can carry the same tier label at very different prices, and the difference is hardware, shims, seals or a sensor. Read what is included before comparing two numbers.

- Is OEM the same as OE?
- Almost, and the difference is the box. The vehicle manufacturer does not make most of its own components — it buys them from suppliers like Bosch, Denso, Valeo and Aisin. OE is that supplier's part in the carmaker's packaging at the carmaker's price. OEM is the same part in the supplier's own packaging, frequently for considerably less.
- Is remanufactured the same as used?
- No. A used part is a part someone removed and sold. A remanufactured part is dismantled completely, cleaned, inspected, has every wear component replaced to a specification, is reassembled and is tested. The core is old; the wear items are not. It carries a warranty, which a used part generally does not.
- What is a core charge?
- A deposit on your old part. Remanufacturing needs a supply of cores, so the price includes a refundable amount you get back when the old unit is returned. It is not a fee — it is your money held until the core comes back, and the core has to be complete and rebuildable.
