Why a start-stop car needs an AGM or EFB battery

A start-stop system restarts the engine dozens of times per journey, which is deep cycling a conventional flooded battery was never designed for. Start-stop vehicles take either an EFB or an AGM battery. You may fit AGM where EFB is specified, never the reverse, and never a standard flooded battery in either.

What start-stop does to a battery

A conventional car starts its engine once or twice a journey. Between starts the alternator holds the battery near full charge and the battery spends its life almost topped up. That is what a flooded lead-acid battery is designed for — a shallow float existence punctuated by short, high-current bursts.

Start-stop changes the pattern completely. The engine stops at every light and restarts when the brake is released. In city traffic that is dozens of restarts per journey, and between them the vehicle is running its electronics — lights, climate blower, infotainment, heated seats — entirely from the battery, with no alternator turning.

That is cycling. Repeated partial discharge and recharge, thousands of times. A standard flooded battery loses capacity fast under that treatment, and once it does, it stops accepting charge quickly enough to recover between stops.

The two types, and the rule between them

EFB — Enhanced Flooded Battery. Still a flooded battery, but reinforced: thicker plates, additional material on the positive plate surface, and a design aimed at roughly double the cycle life of a standard battery. Fitted to entry-level start-stop systems without regenerative braking.

AGM — Absorbent Glass Mat. The electrolyte is held in a glass-fibre mat against the plates rather than sitting as free liquid. That gives much higher charge acceptance — it can take charge quickly, which matters when the only charging opportunity is a short burst under braking — and considerably better cycle life. Fitted where the system does regenerative braking, or where the electrical load is high.

The rule is one-directional and it is not negotiable:

  • AGM specified, AGM fitted. Nothing else.
  • EFB specified, EFB or AGM fitted. AGM is an upgrade and it works.
  • Standard flooded in either: no. It will start the car, it will feel fine for a few months, and it will be flat inside a year.

Registration, and why it matters more than people think

Many vehicles — most of the German makes, and a growing number of others — run a battery monitoring system. A current sensor on the negative terminal measures every amp in and out, and the module builds a running estimate of the battery's state of charge and its age.

The charging strategy is built on that estimate. An old battery gets charged differently from a new one: different target voltage, different priority against other loads, different willingness to allow start-stop.

Fit a new battery without telling the system and it carries on applying the strategy for a worn three-year-old battery to a new one. The new battery is chronically undercharged, it sulphates, and it fails early — and it fails in a way that looks exactly like a defective battery.

The registration procedure is a scan tool routine that resets the age counter and, where the capacity or type has changed, tells the module what is now fitted. It takes minutes. Whether your vehicle needs it is a fact about the vehicle, and it is worth establishing before the old battery comes out rather than after.

The current sensor, and the thing not to do

That monitoring sensor lives on the negative terminal — a small module clamped between the battery post and the earth lead. It is the whole basis of the strategy above.

Two things to avoid:

  1. Do not clamp jump leads or a charger directly to the battery's negative post on a vehicle with one of these. Use the designated earth point on the body or engine. Current that bypasses the sensor is current the module never sees, and it corrupts the state-of-charge estimate.
  2. Do not damage or omit the sensor when refitting. They corrode, they get over-tightened and cracked, and a car running with a failed battery sensor throws charging faults and disables start-stop permanently.

Fitting one properly

  • Note the radio code, seat memory and anything else that is volatile, or use a memory saver.
  • Record the battery's specification from the label: capacity in Ah, cold-cranking amps, and the type — AGM or EFB. You need all three.
  • Disconnect negative first, reconnect negative last.
  • Handle the current sensor by its body, not by its lead. Do not over-tighten the terminal clamp onto it.
  • Clean the terminal posts and clamps. Corrosion here is a resistance, and a resistance in a charging circuit is a chronic undercharge.
  • Register the battery if the vehicle requires it.
  • Check the charging voltage afterwards. A modern smart charging system varies its output deliberately, so read it over a few minutes rather than taking one number.

Reading a failing start-stop battery early

The system gives you two clear warnings before it strands you:

Start-stop becomes intermittent. It works on a long run and not on a short one, or it works in mild weather and not in cold. That is the monitoring system declining to shut the engine off because the battery cannot guarantee a restart.

Start-stop stops entirely. The battery's state of health has dropped below the threshold.

Neither of these is a fault to be cleared. Both are the car reporting a measurement, and the measurement is correct.

Questions people ask

My start-stop has stopped working. Is the battery dead?
Usually it is the first symptom, yes. The battery monitoring system disables start-stop to protect a battery whose state of charge or state of health has dropped. The car is not broken — it is telling you, in the only way it has, before you get a no-start.
What is battery registration and do I need it?
Many European makes require the new battery to be registered to the battery monitoring system with a scan tool. The charging strategy is tuned to the battery's estimated age; without registration the car keeps charging as if the battery were old and worn, which chronically undercharges the new one and shortens its life.
Can I fit a bigger battery than the original?
Only if it physically fits the tray and clamp, has the terminals the right way round, and matches or exceeds the original specification. Bigger is not automatically better on a monitored system — the registration process asks for the capacity, and the charging strategy is built around it.
