SKF suspension & steering
SKF is a Swedish bearing manufacturer that supplies industry as well as vehicles, and it makes the bearing at the centre of its hub assemblies rather than buying it in. On a sealed unit that cannot be serviced, the bearing is the part that decides its life.
The bearing is the product
A modern wheel hub assembly is a sealed cartridge: bearing, hub, flange, ABS encoder ring and often the sensor, pressed together and never opened. It is not adjustable and not repairable. When the bearing inside is finished, the assembly is finished.
That construction makes the identity of the bearing manufacturer the whole question, and it is exactly what a finished assembly hides. Two units can look identical on a shelf and differ entirely in the steel, the heat treatment, the seal design and the internal clearance they were built to.
SKF has made bearings since 1907, primarily for industrial applications where a failure stops a production line. The hub assemblies it sells for vehicles are built around bearings from that same discipline, with seal arrangements designed for road salt and standing water rather than a clean factory floor.
SKF was founded in Gothenburg in 1907 around Sven Wingquist's self-aligning ball bearing, invented to survive shaft misalignment in textile mills. That tolerance for imperfect alignment is directly relevant to a vehicle, where a hub carrier is never quite true after a pothole and the bearing must go on working anyway.
